The 5th SBML Hackathon
University of Newcastle
June 7–8, 2007
The fifth SBML Hackathon was held at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, and co-hosted by the following NCL groups and projects: Systems Biology Resource Centre (SBRC), the Statistical Bioinformatics group, the BASIS group, and the Centre for Integrated Systems Biology of Ageing and Nutrition (CISBAN).

Location
The SBML Hackathon took place in the Clairemont Tower at Newcastle University. The central University campus is located on a 50-acre site near the center of Newcastle. The location of Clairemont Tower is indicated on this map.
Accommodation
Participants stayed at the County Hotel. The hotel is in Newcastle city centre, opposite Newcastle Central station and about a 15 minute walk from the Hackathon Venue. This Google map has further details.
Transportation
This Google map contains links to the accommodation, airport, train station and venue.
By Air
Newcastle is easily accessible from the rest of the UK and Europe
- A busy international airport on the northern edge of the city provides links to most European capital cities.
- Budget airlines flying to Newcastle Airport
From the airport, attendees were able to either get a taxi to their accommodation, or get the Metro to Central train station.
By Train
The Newcastle Train station was opposite the accommodation, and there are fast rail connections to London (2 hours 45 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour 20 minutes) and most other UK cities.
By Coach
There is a busy coach station in Newcastle, and delegates were able to either get a taxi to their accommodation, or walk (~5 minutes).
Newcastle Metro System
The City Centre, the Central Train Station and the Airport are all connected by the Metro, Newcastle's light rail rapid transport system. The nearest stations to the University and the Accommodation were Haymarket and Central train station respectively.
Visas
Some attendees needed a visa to enter the UK. Further information on visa requirements can be found at the UK government visa website.

UK Power
UK electrical current is 50 Hz, 240 V. Travelers from areas with different standards needed to bring adapters to connect some equipment to the standard UK power outlets.
