Software tutorials are fair game for ICSB 2007 21 Mar '07 17:53

This risks being slightly off-topic, but I think it's
sufficiently on-topic to bring up here. The upcoming ICSB
2007 offers an opportunity for people who have been
developing major software (including SBML-compatible
software) and techniques in systems biology to offer
tutorials about their work. Below is the announcement and
information about how to go about proposing tutorials.

If you are interested in giving a tutorial, I recommend
speaking up as soon as possible, because there is only a
limited number of slots and they do tend to fill up
quickly. (Also, the deadline is coming up soon.)

Call for Proposals for Tutorials
-----------------------------------------------------------
8th International Conference on Systems Biology (ICSB-2007)
http://icsb-2007.org
-----------------------------------------------------------

We are now accepting proposals for tutorials to be held in
conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Systems
Biology, which will be held 1-6 October 2007 in the Long
Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California USA.

Tutorials: 1 October 2007
Conference: 2-4 October 2007
Workshops: 5-6 October 2007

Deadline for Proposals for Tutorials: 30 April 2007
Notification of Acceptance: 15 May 2007

Conference Theme: "Sea Changes in Biology"
------------------------------------------
Since 2000 the annual International Conferences on Systems
Biology (ICSB) have ushered in a new era in biology, marked
by a focus on understanding the complexity of life through
the study of systems and networks, and powered by approaches
drawn from engineering, computer science, mathematics, and
physics. A phenomenal amount of progress has been made using
these new interdisciplinary approaches, affecting all areas
of biology.

Session topics this year will include the following focus
areas: Morphogenesis; Regulatory Systems; Multiscale
Networks; Synthetic Biology; Mathematical Frontiers;
Technological Frontiers; Systems Bioinformatics; and Systems
Biomedicine.

Call for Proposals for Tutorials
--------------------------------
Deadline for Proposals: 30 April 2007

Tutorial proposals are invited with emphasis on tutorials
that provide delegates with a greater depth of understanding
into a particular area of systems biology, providing
hands-on experience where appropriate. The proposal shall
include the purpose and background of the subject area, name
of organizer and speakers, expected numbers of participants,
etc. If tutorial material already exists even in draft
stage, if would be helpful for the committee to make a more
informed decision. Tutorials can be up to 3 hrs in length.

Examples of Tutorials Given at Prior Meetings
---------------------------------------------
Tutorials should be on subjects of interest to the systems
biology community. Examples of tutorials given at prior
meetings include:

Analysis of Sequence and Expression Data
Analyzing Biochemical Systems using the E-Cell System
Applications of Experimental Design and Model Selection to Signal
Transduction Pathway Modeling
CellDesigner
Computational Cell Biology with the Virtual Cell
DNA Microarrays, DNA Structure, and Gene Expression
Engineering Design Principles for Biologists
Genetic Network Analysis
Graphical Probabilistic Models in Systems Biology
Introduction to CellML
JACOBIAN Software for model building, validation and deployment in
systems biology
Modeling, Simulating and Analyzing Biochemical Systems with Copasi;
Advanced Model Analysis with Copasi
New mathematical methods for systems biology
Practical Strategies for Motif Discovery
Stochastic Gene Expression: From Theoretical Models to Experiments
Structural and functional analysis of signaling networks
The Systems Biology Markup Language
The Systems Biology Workbench
Systems Biology Toolbox for MATLAB
The Virtual Cell Software Environment

Venue
-----
Meeting rooms will be provided on a space-available basis in
the convention center. Space for up to nine tutorials to be
held simultaneously is available, with capacities of 63 to
96 people (classroom-style seating) or 140-210 people
(theatre-style seating).

Each tutorial room will be supplied with one digital
projector and internet access will be available.

A single morning and afternoon coffee-break will be provided
by ICSB.

Lunches will not be provided; however, there are ample
venues within walking distance of the convention center for
lunch.

Registration and Fees
----------------------
There is no charge to present a tutorial
(academic/non-profit only). However, all presenters at
accepted tutorials are expected to register for ICSB.

Commercial tutorials may be presented at a cost of $1000
(per half-day tutorial). Commercial tutorials are tutorials
that primarily focus on using specific commercial products
or systems, or at which commercial products are advertised,
promoted, or sold, or which are primarily taught by the
distributors or producers of those products. The program
committee will make the final determination of whether or
not a tutorial is commercial.

Organizers of accepted tutorials will receive an honorarium
of $250 (total per half-day tutorial) to help defray the
costs of preparation for the tutorial.

All tutorial attendees are expected to attend ICSB. There
will be a modest charge, in addition to ICSB registration,
to attend a tutorial ($30 advance/$40 pre-registration/$50
on-site as space permits). Registration for tutorials will
be handled by ICSB.

Other Requirements
------------------
All presentation materials should be made available to
students no later than the date of the tutorial, in either
electronic or hard- copy format. The organizers are
responsible for all duplication fees and arrangements.

The Long Beach Convention Center requires the use of
specific contractors for certain services, including
catering, audio-visual, telecom and internet
services. Alternative catering/coffee-service is not
permitted.

Attendance at a tutorial will require registration at ICSB
and attendees may be asked to show their
identification. Appropriate badging for all tutorial
attendees will be provided by ICSB.

How to Submit a Proposal
------------------------
Organizers should submit an abstract that is one page
(letter or A4 size) in PDF format to:

icsb2007-info@caltech.edu

For inquiries:

Send email to icsb2007-info@caltech.edu
