decision of declining the SBML editor position this year 05 Jan '11 11:45

Dear colleagues,

Mike recently announced the results of the SBML editor election
(congratulations Sarah and Chris), and my decision to decline the
position. I felt I owed an explanation to the 17 people who voted for me.

Over the last year or so, there was a decrease in accepted nominations for
editorship. That affected not only SBML, but SBGN and BioPAX as well. I
believe that a democratic election only works if there are enough serious
candidates. I therefore accepted the nomination. It turned out that there
were plenty of nominations accepted by nominees for this year's election,
all perfect candidates for an editor position. Therefore my candidacy was
not really needed. As Mike said, my regular job plus my other standard
involvements do not let me much time to be an efficient and thorough SBML
editor (well, I would actually focus on SBML, because I love it, but my
other duties would then suffer). But more importantly, in addition to the
rock-solid cornerstone of the language (hi Sarah) we need fresh blood in
the editorial board. I am in fact delighted that scientists such as Chris
and David received so many votes. Synthetic biology and physiology are
domains where modeling is exploding at the moment, and we need SBML to
support research in those fields.

By declining the honor of being an SBML editor this year, I do not mean a
decrease of my commitment to SBML. I will of course continue to host part
of the SBML team and, do my best to bring as much support as I can to
support the development of the language and its implementation. I am, more
than ever convinced that, after transforming the field of computational
systems biology, SBML will play a major role in the forthcoming years on a
larger scene.

I am looking forward to an exciting SBML year.
