libSBML has a tremendous amount of logic concerning such
Level/Version issues. If at all possible, to improve
compatibility between the Java version and libSBML, it might
be worth investigating what libSBML does in various
situations where Level/Version differences are possible.

(I realize you're all doing jsbml development work
voluntarily -- that's wonderful and amazing! -- so I'm not
placing demands here. I only just know that Sarah spent
considerable time working out what's supposed to happen in
different situations.)
