I definitely think this is a step in right direction, and I'm sure the proposal and extension will evolve over time to suit more aspects of constraint-based reconstruction and analysis. I'm going to start testing out your preliminary code over the next couple of weeks with the COBRA Toolbox and will let you know how things go.

One thing you might want to consider is using the cobra tag or cbm tag instead of fba; fba's only a part of constraints-based modeling.
