I am probably too old fashioned, but I would actually add this to the
core. Programs could easily ignore the stdev attribute, but those who
know what to do with it could then take it.
The alternative would be to make a very small package that just adds
these optional attributes.
I agree with Nicolas that to force a full-blown distrib package is
perhaps too much and very few programs would therefore end up taking
this up.
