Thanks for your thoughts on this. In fact, I do believe it
could be done using user-defined functions too. The reason
I hadn't pursued it in that proposal is I know a number of
tools don't support user-defined functions, and so making
the scheme rely on user-defined functions would have added
another level of requirements on implementations.
However, your point about duplicating definitions is a good
one. It's probably worth adding this as a 3rd option to a
2nd revision of the proposal. (I spotted a significant
error yesterday in the current proposal and so have to issue
an update anyway. I'll add it then, assuming there don't
end up being any technical hurdles.)
